Ask anyone who has built or retrofitted a low-energy home which decisions mattered most and windows come up again and again. Walls, roofs and floors follow well-established insulation practice – the challenge there is continuity and eliminating thermal bridges, not the insulation itself. Windows are harder: they lose several times more heat per square metre than even a well-detailed wall, they’re where comfort in a room is won or lost, and they’re the hardest place to fix a specification error once the build is under way. That’s why the Passive House standard, the most demanding energy performance standard in mainstream use, treats glazing with such care.

What makes a window a Passive House window?

The Passive House standard is defined by whole-building outcomes: a space heating demand of no more than 15 kWh/m² a year, a peak heating load of 10 W/m², and airtightness of 0.6 air changes per hour (ACH50) or better. No single product achieves that on its own, but windows carry particular weight because they are the weakest part of the thermal envelope. Even an excellent window loses several times more heat per square metre than a Passive House wall.

To play their part in a cool-temperate climate such as the UK’s, windows need a whole-window U-value (Uw) of 0.80 W/m²K or lower. Windows are also where comfort is won

The energy case for high-performance glazing is well known. The comfort case is underrated. A poorly performing window feels cold on its internal face in winter, which creates downdraughts, radiant chill near the glass, and condensation on frames and sills – problems you notice every day, not just on your energy bill.

High-performance glazing keeps the internal surface within a few degrees of room temperature, so the space next to a window stays usable in January as well as June. It also means your windows can gain more energy than they lose: south-facing glazing with the right g-value harvests free solar heat through the winter, which is why size, orientation and shading need treating as one calculation rather than an aesthetic afterthought.

Do you need certified windows, or certified performance?

Formal certification on every component is not compulsory for every project. What matters is whether the installed window will deliver the performance your energy model assumes. If you are pursuing full certification, your designer will model the building in PHPP (the Passive House Planning Package) and will need verified performance data for every window and door – so choose a supplier who can provide it. Installation can make or break the numbers

A window is only as good as its junction with the wall. A 0.80 W/m²K window installed carelessly can perform worse in practice than a lesser window fitted well. What do Passive House windows cost?

Triple-glazed Passive House windows typically cost around 10 to 15 per cent more than high-quality double glazing. Set against that, Passivhaus Trust research puts certified buildings at 75 to 90 per cent less energy for space heating than standard UK new-build construction, and the comfort benefits arrive from day one regardless of payback timelines.

For retrofits, the EnerPHit standard relaxes the targets to reflect the constraints of existing buildings: a heating demand of 25 kWh/m² a year and airtightness of 1.0 ACH50.
